Usability testing is an important part of the UX design process. We evaluate the usability of prototypes, wireframes, and final products. Usability testing can help us identify usability problems early on in the design process, which can save time and money in the long run for the product.

Benefits of Usability Testing Websites

and Mobile Applications

Usability testing is a method of evaluating how easy it is for users to complete tasks on a website, mobile app, or other digital product. It is an important part of the user experience (UX) design process, as it helps to identify and fix usability problems before a product is released to the public.

Ideally conducted multiple times during the development of a product or service, at multiple stages of progress. This is primarily done for us rectify errors with the client and user pain points to minimise losses or negative reviews with the final product or service.

Usability testing is an essential tool for any team that is developing a digital product in order to create a product that is easy to use and enjoyable for your target users when usability testing websites.

Introduction

Usability testing for websites can be conducted in a variety of ways. Our approach is to test and experience the website as a user and identify any areas where a user would have difficulty.  Another approach we use for usability testing for websites is to use remote testing tools. These tools allow us to interrogate the platform and see if any errors exist.

It is also important to choose a variety of tasks that are representative of what users would actually do on the website. For example, if the website is an e-commerce site, we test tasks such as adding items to a cart, completing checkout, and searching for products.

When conducting usability testing on websites, it is important for us to consider the following factors:

  • The tasks that users are trying to complete

  • The devices and browsers that users are using

  • The demographics and experience level of users

What we do

In addition to these benefits, usability testing can also help's to:

  • Usability testing can help us to understand the needs of your users and how they interact with your product or service. This information can be used to improve the design and functionality of your product or service.

  • Make better design decisions. Usability testing can help you to make better design decisions by providing feedback on how users are interacting with your product or service. This feedback can be used to identify and fix usability problems before they are released to the public.

Usability testing has a number of benefits, including:

  • Identify usability problems early on. Usability testing can help us to identify usability problems early on in the product development process. This can save you time and money in the long run.

  • Improve the user experience. Usability testing can help us to improve the user experience of your product or service. By making your product easier to use, we can increase customer satisfaction and loyalty.

  • Increase sales. Usability testing can help us to increase sales by making your product more appealing to potential customers. When a product is easy to use, people are more likely to buy it and recommend it to others.

  • Reduce support costs. Usability testing can help us to reduce your support costs by identifying and fixing usability problems before they are reported by users.

  • Improve the competitive advantage of your product or service. Usability testing can help you to improve the competitive advantage of your product or service by making it easier to use than your competitors' products or services.

Usability Testing Websites

Participant testing is a crucial part of the testing any product in order for the client to see how their user's navigate around the website or system.  An example of this for us would be when see:detail, worked on behalf of Sunderland City Council (SCC), to carry out remote usability testing to assess the user-friendliness of its overhauled public website.

Using Loop11 (an online usability testing system), these user tasks covered a variety of pages that users would frequently search for on a council website, and therefore the usability tests had a heavy emphasis on navigability of the web page. The process for selecting these tasks was detailed in previous reports. The tests were launched, and the results collected and analysed. The final report documents the findings of the study and gives some recommendations on how usability of SCC’s website could be improved in light of these findings.  This was valuable information for our client.

Usability Testing Participants

Usability testing is the process of evaluating how easy an app is to use. This can be done through a variety of methods, including user observation, heuristic evaluation, and usability testing. By identifying and fixing usability problems early on in the development process, you can save your company time and money in the long run.

Older adults are a growing demographic of users, and it is important for us to ensure that websites and mobile apps are accessible to them. When conducting usability testing with software that older adults are using, it is important for us consider the following factors:

  • The vision and hearing of older adults

  • Their dexterity and motor skills

  • Their cognitive abilities

We have test coverage throughout usability testing websites to choose tasks that are relevant to the interests of older adults, such as booking appointments in hospital systems for example.

01  Sunderland Council

See:detail, on behalf of Sunderland City Council, carried out remote usability testing to assess the user-friendliness of its new public website. In consultation with Sunderland City, nine common usertasks were selected for testing. These tasks covered a variety of pages that users would frequently search for on a council website.

Seventy-two participants started the task. Only those participants who completed the full test were included in the results, to ensure consistency between different tasks.
